Dive and Travel Expo 2010 Photo and Video Competition
Show off your underwater images and compete with your peers for great prizes.

Send us your digital photos and videos. Easy entry, just email us your image or mail a CD to our office. No entry fees and no hassles. Start looking through your tapes and digital captures to enter your best work.

Our annual Dive and Travel Expo photo and video competition is open to all amateur underwater photographers and videographers. You must be at least 18 years of age.  Employees of the Dive News Network and the immediate families of such employees are ineligible to participate. The contest is open to all participants regardless of residence or citizenship, so long as the laws of their jurisdiction allow
participation.

For Photos:
This year’s contest is accepting only digital entries. All work must be original and the person submitting it must have ownership. All photos are to be 8 inches x 10 inches. (2400 pixels x 2040 pixels at 200 DPI) (Horizontal or vertical format both accepted). All entrants need to attach your photo to an e-mail and submit it to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . Each photo entry needs to be attached to a separate e-mail, although you can enter more than one photo. (Only one photo per e-mail) All photos submitted must be clearly identified with:

  • Photographer’s name
  • Email address
  • Phone number
  • Photo Title

The following photos will not be accepted:

  • Collages
  • Photos previously entered
  • Already published photos
  • Photos that do not meet size requirements

Art titling of your entry is encouraged and may help your photo stand out.

All photos must be submitted before or on this date. The photographer will retain all rights to their photo. However by entering the contest, you hereby grant the Dive & Travel Show, a division of the Dive News Network, a nonexclusive, worldwide, irrevocable, royalty-free license to reproduce, distribute and publicly display your work. Dive News Network also reserves the right to use your name, city, state and country of residence in promotions as well as future publications.

Where Do I Fit In

  1. There are seven photo categories available for entry. Please indicate which category you are entering your work into. The categories are:
  2. Wide Angle, Cold Environment: These photos cover large areas with a distinct foreground, background, and subject. These photos are taken in a cold water environment. (i.e. the Pacific Northwest or other cold water environment)
  3. Cold Water Close-up: These photos are subject oriented and taken at very close range. These should show clear distinct detail not seen by the naked eye. These photos should also be taken in a cold water environment.
  4. Warm Water Close-up: Photos in this category are of a subject taken at close range showcasing distinct detail not seen by the naked eye. These photos are shot in a warm environment and the subject must be at most 1:6 but can be smaller.
  5. Wide Angle, Warm Environment: These photos cover large areas with a distinct foreground, background, and subject. These photos are taken in a warm water environment (i.e. tropical waters)
  6. Artsy or Creative: These photos can be combined or altered to create one work. Alterations can be electronically or otherwise using artwork or computer graphics. The work has to be the submitters’ creation. Please ensure that your photographic content in dominant in the photo.
  7. Living as a Diver: Divers have unique opportunities and they are individuals whose lifestyle is also unique. The category is reserved for those dive experiences that can be captured as images that show the uniqueness of the diving life. Submitted photos can show any part of the diving lifestyle. These photos do not have to be underwater; they can also be of topside activities.
  8. Environmentally Friendly Photos: This category is reserved for photos that depict marine conversation. The concept of environmentally friendly diving must be the focal point in the photo submitted and both topside and underwater pictures will be accepted.

Up to five photos may be entered in any category or in total. All the photos have to convey an underwater theme. Please do not submit photos taken in aquariums or pools. You may submit a CD but please send copies of your original. Dive News Network is unable to return CD’s and DVD’s. Please set emailed files in .tif or .jpg format. Files cannot exceed 10 MB in size. Please be mindful to set your DPI at 200 DPI minimum or 300 DPI maximum. This will ensure a clear photo reproduction. Videos are to be submitted on a clearly marked DVD.

The Rules – the fine print!

  1. Anyone who is an amateur photographer and/or videographers may enter. All work is to be owned by the person submitting the photo and entry form.
  2. No photo with injury or stress to marine life will be accepted.
  3. Photos that have previously won best of show or placed in the top three in any major competition are not eligible to enter contest.
  4. Each photo must be accompanied by your information (including name, email address and phone number), title of submission, category.
  5. Photographer retains all rights. Dive and Travel Expo reserves the right to publish the winning entries without compensation.
  6. Judging will be done by a panel chosen by the Dive and Travel Expo.
  7. If requested by the judges or staff of the Dive News Network suitable copies of the original unedited video and/or raw digital file will be provided by photographer.
  8. If an award winning entry is later discovered to have violated any of the above rules, the photo will be disqualified. If this is the case Dive News Network reserves the right to recover prizes awarded.
  9. Only one video/snapshot may be entered. These need to be in DVD format. DVD’s will be clearly marked submitters name as well as the title of the video. Video are to be aproximately six minutes long with a title and theme. All videos must have a narrative or music track. No less than seventy percent of the video has to have been underwater. Co-creators are allowed however the video must have been taken by the submitter. No DVD’s older than three years.
  10. Video snapshots are a video no less than ten seconds long, with a max of thirty seconds that has a narrative or music track. The narrative/music track is not however required. These must be underwater video.
  11. With the exception of the Artsy/Creative category, there are to be NO adjustments to photos.

Adjustment exceptions allowed are:

  • Sharpening
  • Color correction
  • Brightness adjustment
  • Contrast adjustment
  • Dodging, burning and cropping are also allowed.
  • Winners will be responsible for taxes, import duties, customs fees and freight on large prizes.

How Do I Know I Won?
Contest winners will be chosen and subsequently notified by email or letter on May 15, 2010. Winners and the Best in Show Video will be shown at the 2010 Dive and Travel Expo’s Saturday Evening Film Festival on May 22, 2010.

Awards will be presented in each division to:

  • First Place
  • Second Place
  • Third Place
  • “Best of Show”
  • “Judges’ Choice”


The last two will be chosen from 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners in all categories by judges’ panel and announced on Saturday night, May 22 at the Film Festival.

There will also be a People’s choice award for each category chosen by the public during the Dive & Travel Expo. The People’s Choice awards will be announced on Sunday, May 23, 2010.
