This year the Dive News Network is sponsoring a coloring contest to encourage creativity while expanding aquatic awareness in youth. Our world’s oceans contain over 97 percent of the water on the planet, supporting unique and fragile ecosystems teeming with amazing forms of life.
The future of this delicate ecosystem is in our youth’s hands. While our oceans occupy nearly 71 percent of our planet’s surface, we have done little to protect it. More oil reaches our oceans each year as a result of leaking automobiles than was spilled in the Prince William Sound by the Exxon Valdez.
Most of the world’s fisheries are being fished above levels of sustainability and due to pollution, our fish and other marine foods have been tainted, rendering them unsafe to eat.
Over 80 percent of the human population lives near coastal regions. As a result, plastic, oils, garbage and other pollutants affect countless marine animals including fish, birds and sea mammals. Coral reefs are declining due to coastal development, destructive fishing, pollution and tourism. Less than half of marine life is protected as opposed to land animals. While some treaties have been reached to protect the planet’s oceans, they are neither enforced nor strict enough to provide adequate protection.
We encourage our youth and future divers to learn about the oceans and the impact they have and changes they can make to protect the future viability of our planet's oceans.
