  • To provide networking opportunities within the magazine publishing industry.
  • To sharpen professional skills required for job placement.
  • To expose individuals to career opportunities in magazines.
  • To promote the function and mission of DNN.
  • To increase awareness and provide information and an opportunity for discussion.

Internships at DNN will help you gain the necessary experience to put you ahead of other candidates in the workplace.  Internships are great resume builders, offer opportunities to network and meet potential future employers, and can be a doorway to a job offer and ultimately a career.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

With multiple opportunities, we offer a variety of internships each semester/quarter:

Web Editor Internship

The web design team is looking for a tech savvy interactive designer to assist with the creation of online content. Must possess high attention to detail and working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, typography and layout for digital media, preparing and optimizing images for the web, and basic HTML/CSS skills. Experience with email marketing a plus.  If you're tech-savvy and hardworking, the web team is looking for you. We need students with an interest in online publishing. The ideal candidate would be organized, undeterred by tedious tasks, and generally willing to pitch in wherever needed. Projects may include resizing images, loading images to the online media gallery, fact checking, research, and data entry.

Editorial Research Internship

Do timelines and deadlines turn you on? Or, perhaps factual errors don't stand a chance against your type A personality. Do you consider Excel spreadsheets a work of art? Our production manager is looking for a detail-oriented, Excel-savvy, reliable self-starter with uncanny organizational skills to work on our magazine content. Primary responsibilities include fact checking through phone calls, email, and internet; researching contact information; managing databases; and proofing. Phone shy applicants need not apply. You'll also have the opportunity to research local events, and compile an activities calendar.

Production Intern

The production department is looking for an intern interested in newspaper layout/production and website management and branding. Applicants should be detail-oriented, hardworking, organized, and team players. Ideal applicants will be interested in the art and design aspect of newspaper production and have web knowledge. While working with the production team, you will be assisting in website development (including social networking), paper layout, and organizational duties, among other things.

Social Media/Marketing Intern

Love social media? Find yourself spending more time connecting with people on the newest platforms? We are currently looking for an intern to work alongside our in-house content marketing department on one of our social media-based projects. The Social Media intern will assist our Production Manager in updating and maintaining multiple social media accounts as well as organizing incoming client data. General knowledge of Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and social media is required. Software competencies must include familiarity and comfort with Microsoft Excel, advanced understanding of Web Marketing, and Joomla/Word Press type posting. This position requires great attention to detail and strong organizational skills as well as an ability to meet demanding deadlines while ensuring accurate content is posted.

Advertising/Sales Intern

Interns in the advertising/sales department will aid the team by gathering materials to provide to clients, creating logs of advertisers, helping to complete projects for the sales team, and helping to better organize the department. Interning with the advertising/sales department is a great way to get experience and interact with all departments, not just advertising/sales. You will see first-hand how special sections and sponsorship opportunities are developed, as well as the follow through of generating income and end product. This is a great internship for a business management student.

IT Internship

As an IT intern, you will help manage the networking, server, and software infrastructure that encompasses more than 15 TB of data. The right person for this job is organized, detailed, and highly knowledgeable about computers and networking. A typical day consists of answering employee requests for repairs, upgrades, and installations, as well as monitoring and working on network drives, software questions, resolving IT issues, and repairs. Requirements: - Knowledge of all windows based operating systems, XP, Vista, Windows 7 - Knowledge of software installation - Basic knowledge of computer hardware - Customer service skills - Love for saving and backing up and writing documentation/instructions.

Accounting Intern

Do you love balancing your check book? As an accounting intern, you can discover the ways a small business accounting team works, and learn real world application of QuickBooks software. Extreme attention to detail and ability to alphabetize are important in addition to knowing how to use a calculator. Knowledge of QuickBooks, excel, and ability to learn proprietary accounting software is important. A passion for ensuring correct data entry is vital in this internship.

ORIENTATION AND HOURS:

Each intern will complete a full day orientation in Oak Harbor with an opportunity to meet other interns and the other DNN employees. Editors and magazine executives will discuss magazine editing and publishing while employees will discuss magazine jobs. Weekly meetings also keep interns informed and provide an opportunity to stay up-to-date with the company. The internship is part time, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., five days a week (though hours are flexible to work with class schedules).

QUALIFICATIONS:

Interns are selected on their completed application and their interest in their chosen internship. Completion of Sophomore level English/Writing class is preferred.

BENEFITS

Upon successful completion of Internship, interns will have the potential for a scholarship from the Oceans of Possibilities non-profit organization as well as hiring potential within the company based on performance.

At the end of the internships, students will be asked to submit a written report on their experience and will be asked if they have any suggestions for the program.

APPLICATION PROCEDURES:

Please send a cover letter indicating your interest in Dive News Network Media Group and describing your career goals, why this internship would be beneficial to you, and why you are qualified to help in the chosen department. In addition, include a résumé, two letters of recommendation, and two writing samples (if applying for editorial based internships. Academic papers and creative writing samples are acceptable, but no longer than 2 pages, please).

Who is Dive News Network Media Group

Dive News Network Media Group Logo

Who We Are:
A network of regional scuba diving magazines, both print and online, that link consumers and businesses together.

Our Mission (What We do):
Our mission is to promote the sport of scuba diving by producing a quality Print and Internet publication that inspires divers to be more active in the sport – locally.

Our Impact:
Local divers dive more often. They purchase more dive gear and go on more trips. They also travel more. By listening to our readers we grow the sport of diving, and invite new divers into the "family".

Our Readership:
We distribute our magazine to every dive retailer in our region. They hand it out and staple their business card to it, recommending it. The magazine promotes them and their area.

We network consumers and businesses together.
Our magazine represents the local dive community to consumers and helps them become more active in the sport. It is, essentially, a listing of “who’s who in the zoo” if you are not listed, you are not a player.

Cost effective Advertising
Our rates are reasonable compared to other publications, yet our circulation is targeted toward the local, regional active dive community creating a GREAT VALUE.

We offer Target Marketing of an important customer – Active Divers.
Our readers are NEW and ACTIVE divers who are in dive stores now. Active divers dive locally, more often and go on more trips. They self identify as divers, not just people who dive.

We are a Valuable Resource for the local dive community.
As the only scuba magazines in our region, we represent our dive community to the world. Our magazines are a resource to new and active divers to find out what is happening. They are active participatory readers – VERY VALUABLE!

Build Awareness & Better Relationships with Decision Makers
Our magazines are read by dive shop owners, instructors and staff member as well as consumers. WE often have industry stories where they are mentioned or they have written. These decision makers are customers who buy equipment or travel to resell. Are you helping them stimulate demand locally? Are you rewarding your present dealers? Are you encouraging new ones to call? Are you advertising with us?

Established Trust and Credibility in the Market Place
We produce the most respected regional magazines in the country. Our magazine is full of entertaining stories written by local divers and then professionally edited, so that we can inspire others to dive more often. Our readers, both print and online, are community members who respect our opinion.

Dive & Travel Expo
We also produce two highly successful Dive and Travel Expos - one in the Seattle area, and the other in the beautiful Santa Clara, CA region. For more information, see www.diveandtravelexpo.com.
